SPIRITUAL WALK
The mythical land of the Incas and the lost city of Machu Picchu, Peru offers travellers an exceptional archaeological heritage, the remains of the many pre-Columbian civilizations that have occupied this vast territory over the course of time. A human, cultural and spiritual journey, punctuated by Andean ceremonies, visits to sacred Inca sites and hikes through grandiose landscapes, awaits you. Even today, the country is rich in living Andean and indigenous culture, with a strong, colorful identity, steeped in legends and history waiting to be discovered.

Highlights
I experienced the Chemin de Saint-Jacques in 2017, starting in Puy-en-Velay and finishing in Spain in Finisterre at the “end of the earth” for a 1,600 km pilgrimage in 70 days of walking. Along the way, I was deeply moved by my dream of becoming a travel guide and taking others on this incredible experience of pilgrimage on the roads to Compostela. I returned in 2019 with 3 other pilgrims, and seeing the happiness in their eyes when they arrived at Santiago Cathedral convinced me to make it my mission. So I undertook the travel guide course, joined the Spiritours team and now accompany people on their spiritual journeys.
Departure from Montreal airport in the evening for a flight to Lima. Private transfer from the airport to your hotel in Lima. Check-in and overnight stay at the hotel.
Private transfer from Lima to the airport, followed by a domestic flight to Cusco (approximately 1h15). Check-in at your hotel in Cusco.
Morning at leisure to rest and explore the imperial city of Cusco, perched at 3,400 meters above sea level. Enjoy getting lost in its streets and discovering the hidden corners of this ancient city rich in history. Suggested visits: Cusco Cathedral, the San Blas neighborhood, the 4 ruins of Sacsayhuaman. Lunch included. Visit the Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun), built in 1440 by the Incas, followed by a 3-hour walk to discover the historical center of the city, including its main square and the colorful San Pedro market. Overnight at the hotel.
In the morning, depart by private transport to Sacsayhuaman Park. Visit the ceremonial center of Q’enco, the fortress of Puka Pukara, and the ruins of Tambomachay, the “Inca baths.” Return to Cusco by following an ancient Inca royal road once used to transport tropical products to the capital. This 2.5-hour walk will lead you to the Plaza de Armas. Then, participate in a Despacho ceremony on a sacred site, an offering to the earth mother performed outdoors by an Andean priest. This 1-hour ceremony, which includes the transmission of wishes through 3 coca leaves, will give you insight into the Inca beliefs behind these remarkable sites.
A day of discovery in the southern valley of Cusco, a region rich in Inca sites yet little known. You will pass through typical villages like Saylla and Andahuaylillas. Your first stop will be the chapel of Andahuaylillas, often called the “Sistine Chapel of Cusco.” This old church, beautifully decorated by Jesuits, is considered the most beautiful in the region. Next, visit the Inca ruins of Tipon, a site dedicated to water with its fountains carved into the mountain. This place is still used today for Inca ceremonies by a handful of faithful. In the afternoon, visit the Inca fortress that once protected the valley from invaders, followed by the impressive pre-Inca site of Pikillacta, a Huari culture settlement and the first civilization to inhabit the valley. This site is perched on a plateau overlooking the Huacarpay lagoon.
A full day dedicated to exploring the treasures of the Sacred Valley. Depart from Cusco towards Pisaq, a village nestled in the heart of the valley. On the way, stop to discover the Awanacancha textile center and a zoological refuge, with panoramic views of the valley. In Pisaq, visit the ruins, a spectacular site perched on the mountain, stretching over 2 km, offering a breathtaking view of the valley. Considered a “small” Machu Picchu, this site impresses with its size and the preservation of its remains. After the visit, you can descend to the village by vehicle or via a 1,050-step staircase, once used by Inca priests to reach the sacred river. Once in the valley, explore the village and its ancestral artisan market, one of the richest and most varied in Peru. Free time at the market to enjoy the surroundings.
A full day exploring the Sacred Valley. Depart from your hotel to Pisaq, with stops at the Awanacancha textile center and the zoological refuge, offering panoramic views of the valley. In Pisaq, discover the majestic ruins stretching over 2 km, often compared to the “small Machu Picchu.” You can descend to the village by vehicle or take the 1,050-step staircase used by Inca priests. Explore the artisan market, one of the richest in Peru. After a visit to Ollantaytambo and its Inca fortress, enjoy wandering through the well-preserved, traditional village streets. Check-in and overnight at the hotel.
Morning at leisure in Ollantaytambo, in the heart of the Sacred Valley. You can choose from several free walks: a 1.5-hour walk to the Inka Carcel, offering a panoramic view of the village and its Inca fortress, or a 4-hour walk to the Inca Gate and the Inca Quarry, on the other side of the river, with stunning views of the Sacred Valley, Mount Veronica, and its glaciers. In the afternoon, depart from Ollantaytambo at 4:36 p.m. aboard the Inca Rail “Voyager” train to the village of Aguas Calientes (arrival at 6:09 p.m.). Enjoy the comfort of the train while admiring the majestic landscapes of the Sacred Valley, with its towering mountains, snowy peaks, winding river, and gradual transition to more lush vegetation. Savor a selection of natural drinks made with typical Andean herbs from the region. This experience in the heart of the Andes will be unforgettable! Overnight at the hotel.
Early morning departure from your hotel to the Machu Picchu sanctuary. Built around 1450 by Emperor Pachacutec on a cliff overlooking the valley by 400 meters, Machu Picchu was primarily a religious sanctuary reserved for the Inca nobility. The city is divided into two main sectors: one agricultural and the other urban. Despite its strategic position, the weakness of the fortifications suggests that the city had only a minor military role. More than 200 stone buildings make up this exceptional site. Likely abandoned before the arrival of the Spanish, the city was forgotten until its rediscovery in 1911. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. While a full exploration could take days, the guided tour will allow you to discover the main treasures of the city in about 3 hours.
From Aguas Calientes, board the Inca Rail “Voyager” train in the morning for a comfortable return to Ollantaytambo. Admire the spectacular landscapes of the Sacred Valley, its mountains, snow-capped peaks, and winding river, while enjoying homemade natural drinks prepared with Andean herbs. Depart from the hotel to visit the Maras salt mines, where salt is still harvested by hand. Continue with the discovery of Moray, an Inca agricultural laboratory with concentric terraces creating temperature differences of up to 10°C. After lunch, explore Chinchero, famous for its textiles and Inca ruins, before returning to Cusco in the late afternoon.
The next day, you will leave the vast green valley of Cusco aboard your private vehicle to cross the arid plateaus of the altiplano, passing by the La Raya pass, close to the glaciers of the Vilcanota mountain range. Arrival in Puno at the end of the day.
Morning transfer to the port of Puno to embark on a private two-day cruise, guided in French, on the emerald waters of Lake Titicaca. Explore the Uros islands, floating islands made of totora (reed), where a small community of fishermen still lives today. The Uros settled on these islands to escape emerging empires such as the Colla and the Incas. This welcoming community now lives off fishing and crafts. The morning continues towards the peaceful island of Amantani, a place without cars or dogs, where the pace of life and philosophy are unique. Visit the two main temples, Pachamama and Pachatata, then meet your host family to discover their way of life. Enjoy some free time before a one-hour walk to the highest point of the island, offering a breathtaking view of the sunset over the lake. In the evening, attend a traditional dance and singing performance in the village’s central square. Overnight stay with the locals.
Breakfast on Amantani Island, then departure by boat to the neighboring island of Taquile, located a few kilometers away. On Taquile, explore the island on foot and discover the culture and lifestyle of its inhabitants. The men knit their own hats, while the women wear layered skirts. These clothes reflect their social status, indicating whether they are married, have children, or are single. Unlike Amantani Island, where Aymara is spoken, the main language here is Quechua. Return in the late afternoon to the port of Puno and transfer to your hotel.
Departure from your hotel to the archaeological site of Sillustani, known for its tower-shaped tombs, the “chullpas,” located on the shores of Lake Umayo. Erected by the Colla people, these funerary structures contain human remains, often grouped by families, accompanied by offerings. Enjoy views of the altiplano and traditional houses. Continue your journey around Lake Titicaca to Juli, in the “stone forest” or HAYUMARCA, also called “The City of Spirits.” Discover the three-dimensional door of Amaru Muru, surrounded by legends and considered sacred. Explore the site, witness the “passage to the other world” ritual, and participate in a traditional purification ceremony with a Paco, a monk from Lake Titicaca.
Private transfer from your hotel to Juliaca airport, located about an hour from Puno. Domestic flight from Juliaca to Lima, approximately 1h30 in duration. Upon your arrival in Lima, private transfer to your hotel. Departure from your hotel with your French-speaking guide to explore Larcomar and the picturesque neighborhood of Barranco. Once a fishing village, now a vibrant university and artistic district, Barranco is famous for its lively nightlife. Discover iconic sites such as the Ermita Church, the famous Bridge of Sighs, the Bajada de los Baños, and the Church of Santísima Cruz. Then, head to the colonial center of Lima, also known as the “City of Kings.” Explore historic squares such as Plaza San Martin and Plaza Mayor, where important monuments like the Government Palace, Lima Cathedral, and Archbishop’s Palace are located. End with a visit to the 17th-century catacombs.
Transfer to Lima airport and return flight to Montreal.
