When it’s time to choose a travel destination, our hearts race, and our imagination soars. We picture ourselves at the Sistine Chapel in Rome, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or crossing San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Scenes from films play in our minds, making these destinations even more alluring. It’s natural to be drawn to popular places that promise awe and wonder!

But have you ever considered Tunisia for your next journey?

Tunisia – A Growingly Popular Destination

Tunisia is increasingly captivating travelers with its cultural richness, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re seeking relaxation on sunny beaches, adventures in the desert, or historical discoveries, Tunisia has something for everyone.

The first time I set foot in this country, I was amazed by the abundance of breathtaking scenery and majestic sites awaiting me. It was October 2019, a perfect season with a wonderfully pleasant Mediterranean climate.

Our itinerary was ambitious: traveling from Tunis to the desert while visiting numerous historical landmarks. With all the videos I captured, I could make my own film about this adventure! Let me share some of my favorite highlights.

Tunis – A Captivating City

Remember the movie The English Patient (1996), directed by Anthony Minghella? This Oscar-winning film features memorable scenes shot in the medina of Tunis, showcasing the vibrant and colorful atmosphere of the souks.

Imagine immersing yourself in this lively ambiance, walking through narrow streets filled with a mix of sounds, scents, and colors for a truly unique sensory experience.

With dozens of quaint shops, it’s a deep dive into Tunisia’s cultural and historical richness, offering a glimpse of traditional commerce in these bustling markets. A stroll through the souks of Tunis is a unique moment to connect with the local people and experience a slice of their daily lives.

Carthage – Roman Ruins in Tunisia

For history enthusiasts, a visit to Carthage is a must. These Roman ruins were the backdrop for several blockbusters, including the iconic film Ben-Hur (1959).

Carthage, a historical gem of Tunisia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This emblematic location offers a fascinating journey through over 3,000 years of history, from Punic civilizations to Roman remains. Among its highlights are the impressive Antonine Baths—the Roman version of modern spas but on a much grander scale!

With its spectacular ruins overlooking the Gulf of Tunis, Carthage offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. For culture lovers, Carthage is where the past comes alive amidst stunning natural surroundings.

The Amphitheater of El Jem – A Testament to Tunisia’s Heritage

The Romans occupied Tunisia in the 2nd century BC, leaving traces of their empire everywhere, including the famous amphitheater in El Jem. This architectural masterpiece, with its three levels of massive stone arcades, was designed for spectacles like gladiator fights and could hold up to 35,000 spectators. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it’s the third-largest amphitheater and one of the best-preserved in the world.

Standing in this space, you can connect with the courage that echoes through its history. Fun fact: The El Jem Colosseum was used for scenes in the hit film Gladiator (2000) starring the charismatic Russell Crowe.

The expedition continues, and the entrance to the desert is very gentle: the scenery changes with every kilometer, giving way to an impressive expanse.

Chenini – A Timeless Berber Village

Fans of the Star Wars anthology will be thrilled by a visit to Chenini, a Berber village that served as the backdrop for scenes set on Tatooine, Anakin Skywalker’s home planet.

Built into the mountains, Chenini is famous for its troglodyte homes and desert landscapes. The experience feels like stepping 2,000 years into the past, offering unmatched serenity. It’s a place where time slows, allowing for inner reflection and reconnection.

Ksar Ghilane – Tunisia’s Most Beautiful Oasis

Finally, Ksar Ghilane welcomes visitors with a lush oasis of greenery and flowers in the heart of the desert. Known as Tunisia’s southernmost oasis, it’s one of the gateways to the Sahara.

This oasis is famous for its thermal hot springs, where visitors can relax and rejuvenate. Surrounded by golden sand dunes, it’s an ideal starting point for camel treks or ATV rides.

Riding a camel, wearing the traditional keffiyeh for sun and wind protection, feels like stepping into countless cinematic scenes. The desert offers a unique energy that fosters liberation and letting go.

There’s a clear “before” and “after” the desert. It’s a transformative experience, filled with revelations, stripping away the superfluous, and reconnecting us to our human and divine essence.

Warm Hospitality of the Tunisians

Of course, Tunisia offers a stunning journey from the sea to the desert, enriched by the warm hospitality of its people. Tunisians are known for their kindness and willingness to help others.

In villages and cities, it’s not uncommon to be invited to share a meal or mint tea—a symbol of conviviality. Our small group experienced this hospitality, often seen as an act of piety and respect for others. Tunisians are proud of their cultural heritage and enjoy sharing their traditions.

Traveling to Tunisia is an incredible opportunity to explore a country rich in history, culture, and diverse landscapes. It’s an adventure far from the monotony of daily life, inviting reconnection with simplicity and the essentials. Every step promises wonder and a sense of endless possibilities.

Who knows? For your next trip, you might imagine yourself riding a camel across golden dunes at sunset, experiencing an unparalleled sense of freedom.
