In this article, Suzanne Bernard shares her experience of the Kapatakan trail, the “Petit Compostelle du Québec” in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean.
What is the Notre-Dame Kapatakan Trail?
In the heart of the magnificent Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region lies a hidden treasure for hiking and spiritual enthusiasts: the Notre-Dame Kapatakan trail. Known affectionately as “Quebec’s Little Compostela”, this 215-kilometre trail offers a unique experience that blends natural beauty, rich history and personal quest.
As a pilgrim walking guide, I’ve had the privilege of walking this trail many times, and each time I’m amazed by its ability to transform those who take it. The word “Kapatakan”, which means “path” in the Innu language, perfectly reflects the essence of this trail: a passage that guides us not only through Quebec’s spectacular landscapes, but also towards an inner discovery.
What are the most beautiful parts of the Kapatakan Trail?
The trail begins at Notre-Dame-du-Saguenay, on Rivière-Éternité’s majestic Cap Trinité.
From the very first steps, you’re struck by the grandeur of the Saguenay Fjord, its towering cliffs plunging into deep water. It’s a reminder of humility in the face of the power of nature all around us.
As the days go by, the landscape changes, offering a surprising diversity. From dense forests to the peaceful shores of Lac Saint-Jean, each section tells a different story. One of my favorite moments is arriving at the Ermitage Saint-Antoine de Lac-Bouchette, a historic pilgrimage site that marks the end of the trail.
The view of the lake, especially at sunset, is simply breathtaking.

What makes the Kapatakan Trail special
What makes the Kapatakan so special is its pace. Unlike other hikes, where the goal is often to reach the summit or the end of the trail, here every step is a destination in itself. I always encourage walkers to take their time, to observe details: the song of a bird, the texture of a tree trunk, the scent of wild flowers. It’s in these moments of contemplation that the magic really happens.
The trail is dotted with small, welcoming villages, where Quebec hospitality shines brightly. Meeting the locals is often a highlight of the trip. Whether over a shared meal or an impromptu conversation, these exchanges enrich the experience and remind us of the importance of human connection.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a guide is to see the transformation of the walkers as the days go by. Many start the journey with expectations, concerns or questions. As the miles go by, I see faces relax, conversations become deeper, and a certain serenity settle in. Kapatakan has this unique ability to reconnect us to what’s essential, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Can we hike the Kapatakan trail with a group or a guide?
Although the trail can be hiked independently, I highly recommend doing it as part of a guided group, at least for a first experience. Not only does it provide enriching historical and cultural information, but it also creates a special group dynamic. The bonds forged between walkers over the days are often deep and lasting.
In five days of hiking, we’ve only covered a fraction of the 215-kilometre trail, but that’s enough to capture its essence. Each season brings its own wonders: the flamboyant colors of autumn, the invigorating freshness of spring, or the softness of summer days. Whatever the season, Kapatakan never fails to surprise and inspire.
For those who are still hesitating, let me say this: the Notre-Dame Kapatakan trail is not just a hike, it’s an invitation. An invitation to slow down, to observe, to reflect. In our hyper-connected world, taking the time to walk for several days, in communion with nature and ourselves, is a priceless luxury.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a novice in search of meaning, Kapatakan has something to offer you. It’s an experience that leaves a deep impression, one that stays with you and your heart long after the hiking boots have been put away.
So, are you ready to answer the call of the Kapatakan? The trail awaits you, with its promise of discoveries, encounters and perhaps, who knows, personal revelations. One thing’s for sure: you won’t return unchanged from this unique adventure in the heart of Quebec.
